  • Insomnia – Finding Rest in a Restless World

Sleep restores us for healing, clarity, and emotional equilibrium. Yet for many people, a good night’s sleep is unattainable. If you spend nights awake, staring at the ceiling or waking up exhausted and more so than when you went to sleep, you may be suffering from insomnia and you are not alone.

What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake feeling refreshed even when you’ve had enough hours in bed. It isn’t just about the quantity of sleep, but the quality.

There are two main types of insomnia:

  • Acute Insomnia: Short-term sleep issues often caused by stress or a life event, lasting days to weeks.
  • Chronic Insomnia: Ongoing trouble with sleep that happens at least three nights a week and lasts for three months or more.

Common Symptoms of Insomnia

  • Difficulty falling asleep, even when tired
  • Waking up multiple times during the night
  • Waking too early and being unable to return to sleep
  • Feeling unrefreshed after sleeping
  • Daytime fatigue or low energy
  • Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things

What Causes Insomnia?

Insomnia does not occur by chance. It is usually the body’s reaction to a disturbance in your mind, way of life, or health. Some common causes include:

  • Stress and Anxiety – Worries about work, relationships, finances, or health can keep your mind alert long after your body is ready for rest.
  • Bedtime Habits – Having poor bedtime routines, spending time on screens right before sleep, or being in a noisy environment can really throw off your internal clock.
  • Diet and Stimulants – Things like caffeine, alcohol, sleeping in too late, and sugary foods can rev up your nervous system and mess with your natural sleep cycles.
  • Underlying Health Conditions – Issues like pain, trouble breathing, menopause, thyroid problems, or mental health conditions can all interfere with getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Medications – Some prescription medications can lead to sleeplessness as a side effect.

How Insomnia Affects Your Life

  • Work Performance: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, or slow reaction times
  • Relationships: Irritability, withdrawal, or emotional sensitivity
  • Mental Health: Heightened anxiety, sadness, or feelings of isolation
  • Physical Health: Frequent colds, fatigue, headaches, or weight changes

Sleep is the foundation of good health when it’s disturbed, everything else feels off balance.

Natural and Holistic Ways to Improve Sleep

At Veda, we believe that small, consistent changes can make a big difference. Here are some holistic practices to support restful sleep:

  1. Create a Sleep Sanctuary
Your bedroom should be a place of peace. Keep it cool, dark, and quiet. Use calming colors, soft textures, and avoid bright lights and electronic devices at bedtime.
  2. Follow a Regular Sleep Schedule
Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. This helps reset your internal body clock.
  3. Mind Your Intake
Avoid caffeine after 2 PM and minimize sugar and alcohol in the evening. Herbal teas like chamomile or ashwagandha blends can help relax the nervous system.
  4. Move Gently
Gentle yoga, walking, or stretching in the early evening helps release tension. Avoid intense workouts close to bedtime.
  5. Calm the Mind
Meditation, journaling, or listening to soothing music can slow racing thoughts. Try deep belly breathing or guided body scans as you lie in bed.
