Expressive Arts Therapy

Expressive Arts is a multimodal method, that is, involving more than one of our senses (hearing, touching, seeing, etc.) or integrating more than one of them to uncover our thoughts and feelings. Utilizing different performing arts, e.g., painting, dancing, singing, writing, etc.Using this as a treatment approach, people work with a trained therapist who analyses their responses through the art form of their choice and helps them release and understand their emotions better. It can be used with both children and adults. As expressive arts utilizes different modalities of senses, it can majorly be grouped in the following categories:
  • Art therapy: uses visual and tactile (touch) senses majorly – such as drawing, painting, and sculpting
  • Dance therapy: utilizes (kinesthetic) physical movement and dance to release and manage with one’s symptoms
  • Music therapy: using listening (auditory) to or creating music
  • Writing therapy: exploring thoughts and feelings through writing poems, stories or simply a journal.
It is important to note that while the activities mentioned above could seem a part of one’s daily life, it is different when used as a form of therapy, as many techniques and processes are ntegrated to meet the goals. Some concerns it may help include: stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, grief, developmental disorders, emotional and interpersonal concerns, trauma related concerns, it may also be useful for children who may not yet have the vocabulary to describe their thoughts or feelings. It is important to remember that the activities need to be analysed by an expert to achieve the goal. Art therapy is an adjunct therapy approach, that is, it is not used as the only process in a treatment plan.
