Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder:
Understanding and Managing
Uncontrolled Urges

Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) is characterized by persistent, intense, and uncontrollable sexual urges, thoughts, or behaviors that interfere with daily life, relationships, and emotional well-being. Individuals struggling with CSBD often experience distress and difficulty controlling their impulses, despite negative consequences.

Signs and symptoms

  • Guilt and shame: Feeling guilt or shame after engaging in sexual behaviors
  • Escape behaviors: Using sexual behavior to escape from problems like depression, anxiety, or loneliness
  • Risky behaviors: Engaging in risky sexual behaviors that can lead to sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, or legal problems
  • Relationship problems: Having difficulty making and keeping healthy and stable relationships
  • Social withdrawal: Giving up social, work-related, or recreational activities to pursue sexual stimulation.

  • Family conflicts
  • A history of sexual or physical abuse
Diagnosis

The diagnosis of CSBD is made when the compulsive sexual behavior persists and causes marked distress or impairment. A clinical assessment includes the following:

  • In-depth interviews elucidating behavior patterns and emotional distress.
  • Assessment for co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Assessment of possible triggers and underlying psychological issues.
