First let’s understand what Addiction is.
Addiction is actually a disorder which is broadly a neuropsychological disorder which includes indulging in a compulsive and an intense urge to use a substance or persistently repeat a behaviour to a point that it begins to become harmful and have negative repercussions of it on the individual. It means that the person no longer has the control over the situation at hand and is being driven by the substance that has caused the addiction.
Continued usage and consistent involvement with the substance/behaviour like alcohol, drugs, porn, gambling, tobacco addiction, etc negatively influences the individual’s health, daily routine, inter-personal relationships and career as well.
So, let’s go to the Roots of it and try to understand some of the Factors that contribute to Addiction –
Genetics play an important role for a person to develop addictive behaviour and it actually accounts for around 50-60% of an individual’s susceptibility towards addictive behaviour/disorder. Anything if repeated over and over again reinforces neural pathways which in turn implements a habit of dependency and becomes a part of an individual’s daily routine.
An individual suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other chronic conditions for a prolonged amount of time might have symptoms which have been associated with addiction.
Most of the time, people experiencing a lot of pain, especially emotional pain might have a tendency to use substances or certain behaviours as a coping mechanism to deal with that intense pain.
People whose personalities have been shaped in such a way that they become impulsive, are unable to manage stress, people pleasers, etc can be linked to addictive actions.
The attitude and outlook that the “so called society” has towards consumption of drugs, alcohol impacts consistent habit formation and eventually leads to addiction. One of the most important factors that contributes to addiction as a habit is its easy availability and accessibility of these substances that increases its usage rates a lot. Media influence in today’s times have just hyped and romanticized these substances in such a way that an individual feels indirectly pressured as well to try out these substances to eradicate the FOMO specially across our youth.
Hence, these are some Alarming Factors that Contribute to Addiction and the De-Addiction Treatment of it requires a Holistic and Expert Approach to help Individuals deal with it in a Healthy and Effective manner and Consistency is Key here.
