How Do I Know If I Have Depression?

Depression is a term that has come to be used commonly by people. At some point in our lives, we all have heard people saying that they are ‘depressed’, but what does depression actually mean?

Depression is a persistent mood disorder that is characterized by various symptoms, some of which need to be present for at least a period of 2 weeks. It is a psychological disorder that needs to be diagnosed by a licensed clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist. The diagnosis is given based on the presence of symptoms and its severity.

But before going to a professional, there are some ways in which you can identify if you are showing signs of depression.

  1. Presence of low mood- The low mood should persist for most of the day, for a period of 2 weeks at least, for it to be considered a symptom of depression.
  2. Loss of interest in pleasurable activities- Losing interest in activities you earlier enjoyed could be indicative of an underlying mood concern. Also, it might lead you to isolate yourself from your friends and family and withdraw from social activities you earlier engaged in.
  3. Changes in weight and appetite- Depression has an effect on both the psychological and biological aspects of a person. Having a significant weight loss or gain, and experiencing changes in appetite is another symptom of depression.
  4. Disturbances in sleep- If you have depression, you might be experiencing sleep disturbances. Significant changes in sleep pattern, such as insomnia or hypersomnia is a symptom of depression.
  5. Feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness- You might feel worthless and hopeless about yourself or the future if you have depression. It is present nearly every day, and it affects the person’s ability to engage in everyday activities. These are recurrent thoughts and feelings that the person experiences over the course of a day.
  6. Thoughts about death and/or suicidal ideation- One of the most serious symptoms of depression is suicidal ideation, or thoughts about death. If you are experiencing such thoughts, you should immediately seek out the help of professionals and reach out to your loved ones.

It’s important to note that there is a difference between feeling sad and being depressed. Sadness is more temporary in nature, whereas depression impairs a person’s ability to function in their daily lives and causes significant difficulties for them.
