Cocaine is a stimulant drug derived from the leaves of the coca plant and is usually sold and used as a white powdered substance, and is usually snorted through nose. It’s a stimulant in nature, thus it increases the alertness and energy of the body. It affects the neuropathways, and makes a person feel energetic, euphoric and talkative.
Cocaine has various adverse effects on the body which ranges from mild (restlessness) to severe effects (paranoia, hallucinations). Although there are no specific medications which are used to treat cocaine addiction some medications are used to treat the deficiencies in the body which develop due to it, like deficiency of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
Psychotherapy is the major and most important part of cocaine addiction treatment
A. Cognitive behavioural therapy: is used to help the patient learn to avoid the obstacles that can affect their sobriety. It also helps them to develop and learn new and healthy coping mechanisms and ways to deal with emotional problems, and handle stress.
B. Motivational interviewing: is used to help the person recognize the ways addiction has affected their life and has hindered their relationships and life goals. It’s designed to help them feel motivated and optimistic about their recovery and overcome apathy.
C. Contingency management: works on the affected rewards system of the brain and helps to repair that by rewarding the positive behaviours and actions of the person.
D. Community reinforcement: works by emphasizing the positive behaviours identifies in contingency management by building a social support system around the individual. This includes relationship counselling, family therapy, narcotics anonymous and other types of therapies.
Yoga and Meditation when used as supportive techniques along with psychotherapy helps the person develop and strengthen their concentration and also helps fight the urges to use and promotes good physical and mental health.
