Intergenerational trauma refers to the deeply distressing or disturbing experience of trauma that is passed down through generations (from survivor to their descendents). It is also known as transgenerational trauma or multigenerational trauma. In simple terms, if the experience of trauma is overwhelming and significantly impacts one’s life, it can be transmitted to one’s children and then their children for generations despite never having been exposed to the source of trauma. Another way of transmission of trauma is through unconscious body reactions of the parent when confronted with triggers in front of the child, the child may naturally feel the parent’s anxiety, fear or distress.
Trauma usually has long lasting effects over generations and produces neurochemicals that alter brain structure and functioning. This secondary traumatization may lead to maladaptive ways of coping with the unresolved emotions experienced. The coping responses to trauma can be in the form of hypervigilance, hyperarousal or avoidance. Untreated trauma manifests in the form of physiological and psychological issues. When experiencing trauma, the DNA activates genes to help individuals survive through fight, flight, freeze or fawn response. These genes are passed onto offspring in order to prepare them for future traumatic experiences.
Trauma informed interventions along with regular psychotherapy sessions can help in coping with the trauma as well as understanding its impact. The interventions can equip individuals with the necessary skills and tools to heal themselves to break the generational cycles along with managing the body’s automatic response to trauma. The psychological and emotional safety is ensured by processing the emotions and working through deeply held unconscious beliefs and perspectives. Healing occurs when the environment conducive to healing is maintained along with managing the physical, somatic, emotional or mental manifestations of trauma.
